DemoCamp Calgary 7

DemoCamp Calgary 7
I attended DemoCamp Calgary 7 tonight and had a great time as always. Lots of familiar faces in attendance as well as some new ones. This was also the first time DemoCamp Calgary was moved into a bar setting (vicious circle) from start to finish. Meaning we could drink beer before, during and after the demos. Bonus.

The night started with Casey Pechet from Ivoxx Corporation demoing a very cool ipod speech recognition system. Ivoxx let’s you access the music on your ipod in an intelligent manner by preforming metadata and waveform analysis on your mp3 library. This allows Ivoxx to free you from balking robotic commands and let you speak freely and naturally for control.

Casey demonstrated by saying “gimmie some stones” in which a Rolling Stones song began playing. Other examples included “more like this” for similar artists or genres and simply speaking the names of a song and artist for song selection. A request such as “play me something slow” will result in the ipod picking a slow tempo song based on the waveform analysis it completed. The system appears to be fairly compact in size and you can speak directly to your ipod or into a lapel style squeeze microphone that can be purchased separately. Very, very cool stuff.

Next we had Lino Ramirez from AranduCorp demo a predictive analytics service for helping businesses make better decisions. Predictive analytics involves analyzing and observing patterns, relationships among factors and general data mining. Lino walked us through an example of planning a fundraising event. Using gathered data a fundraising committee can target people most interested in their cause based on past fundraising events. Furthermore the system can estimate the amount of money they are likely to contribute. This allows the committee to invite the most suited folk and maximize the money they raise.

Lorand Szojka from Just-In-Time Resources (JITR) was up third. Lorand demoed their media-distribution system that allows anyone to distribute video content globally. Video can be streamed live to multiple offices in a massive global enterprise or can be recorded and stored in a media vault for anyone to search and view. The system allows clients complete control over how public content is and can even provide a subscription based model for an eCommerce approach. The system appears to be extremely flexible and could find itself appearing in many unique settings in the future.

The last demo was filled by the guys at Shopster due to one Sarah Blue falling ill. While struggling with a sensitive network connection (appropriatly named “pwn3D”) we still got a nice overview of the site.

Shopster allows anyone to easily build a functioning eCommerce shop and choose from over 900,000 products to stock it with. Shopster is Based around dropshipping, meaning you don’t have to store or ship any of the products yourself. Basically Shopster does all the grunt work so you can focus on marketing and selling. The site is super slick and certainly easy to use. In about 10 minutes you can select a theme, a few items to stock and have your shop live and ready for customers. The system can also be completely customized to look however you want or integrated into an existing site/blog.

Certainly a good night and I look forward to the next DemoCamp. If you are in the Calgary area check out the democamp wiki DemoCamp/BarCamp Calgary Blog for info.
