Friday Flickr Feature - Lee Summers

The first Friday Flickr Feature is a Polaroid series by Lee Summers.

I’m drawn to taking polaroids (and have been over the past couple years since being exposed to the way Mike Brodie captures people as so many others have) because of its one-of-a-kindness, it’s instant physicality, and the vibrant uniqueness of its colors. I love trying to frame something interesting within such a small square space. Usually, the Polaroid snapshot is synonymous with the pocket digital camera in that the bulk of its use is to capture fleeting moments; parties, gatherings, etc (though much more sentimental and valuable in my opinion because of its one time use). But with my series, I wanted to slow that time frame down. The majority of the photos were taken in the sundown hours, either in areas around my neighborhood, or the subjects neighborhood of friends, or friends of friends over the course of a month. I chose the side by side triptych instead of a vertical display because I wanted each piece to unfold into a different story beginning with the anonymity of the shoes.

Wow. The “feet, hands, face” triptych REALLY captures so much more of the person than a regular photo.

This is how mug shots should be taken! … of course mug shots aren’t usually this purdy.

Right on. Lee’s an ace with the camera. Man doesn’t shoot enough. He’s definitely an inspiration to me.
