Friday Flickr Feature - Caitlin Shearer

Caitlin Shearer is a wonderful artist from Australia. I was able to ask her a few questions about her drawings of beautiful ladies:

How long have you been creating drawings?

Since mid-highschool, so probably about 4 or 5 years. I used to draw a lot as a kid too, but didnt take it seriously until a few years ago.

Do you attend an art school? How has it effected your work?

I am currently in my first year of art school, sudying fine arts and majoring in textiles, (which was a really bad decision on my behalf!).
I dont enjoy it very much, as I find I dont have any time to focus on my own art. I shouldve stuck to painting classes there, because I realised my brain doesnt really think in a textiles based way.
Life drawing classes have been the best. I fell in love with it and I think you can see the improvement in bodies in my work because of that.

What is your favourite medium/s to use for your pictures?

Watercolor paints, gouache, glitter, ink and lead pencils.

Why do you mainly draw women and girls?

They have curves in all the right places and wear glorious clothes.
Girls are precious, and I think I can use my art as a kind of diary, so as a girl, I can express what is happening in my head through the imagery of make-believe girls.
I do draw some boys too, but they are all quite effeminate.

Do you have a favourite piece?

At the moment, it is Anais, one of my newest paintings. It wasnt a struggle at all to create her, so i kinda feel like she was meant to, and just waiting to happen.
I also love Aquiline Cygnet, because its a little bit of my heart on paper.

Where do you find inspiration?

I eavesdrop and write down silly notes in my books and go back to them to use for later. I use my friends and their antics and I also am addicted to looking at art and fashion.

Every Friday internet jogging features an artist, series or something special Chelsee finds while scouring the white, pink and blue treasure trove. We call this the Friday Flickr Feature.

Hi Caitlin, looking at your work made me think of the British fashion illustrator Julie Verhoeven. Do you know of her? Great stuff by the way.
